A majority of the NUS workforce spends at least eight hours in the office and in the process consumes large amounts of energy and resource usage.

The Sustainable Office initiative aims to render all offices on campus a Sustainable Office as part of the effort to nurture an environmentally conscious and proactive NUS community. For instance, computers are switched to stand-by mode when not in use for more than 15-30 minutes and staff are trained to properly use printers and photocopiers so as to reduce generation of waste paper due to misuse.

Tentatively, the offices/departments selected for the implementation of the Sustainable Office Programme are University Hall, Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE), Office of Estate and Development (OED) and Office of Student Affairs (OSA). Other offices and departments will be scheduled to implement the Sustainable Office Programme between 2008 - 2009.
